AMAJUBA DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY ACTING MAYOR, COUNCILLOR T.E MTHEMBU JOINS NEWCASTLE LOCAL MUNICIPALITY’S ZONE 4 (BLAAUWBOSCH ) IDP & BUDGET ROADSHOW AND SUPPORTS INFORMAL TRADERS AND RECYCLERS
8 May 2025
As part of the ongoing 2025/26 Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and Budget Roadshow programme, the Honourable Acting Mayor of Amajuba District Municipality, Councillor T.E. Mthembu, joined Newcastle Local Municipality’s Mayor, Councillor D.X. Dube, for today’s public consultation session held at St Lewis, covering Wards 6, 12, 15, 16, 17, and 18. Councillor Mthembu was accompanied by the Honourable Council Speaker, Councillor uMntwana S.O. Zulu, the Acting Municipal Manager, Mr Thubelihle Buthelezi, and Senior Officials from Amajuba Di
strict Municipality.
While the platform primarily serves to engage communities on their developmental priorities and municipal service delivery expectations, Councillor Mthembu’s presence also advanced a parallel district-wide Local Economic Development initiative aimed at strengthening the informal economy. In alignment with Amajuba District Municipality’s commitment to inclusive growth, the Acting Mayor used the occasion to deliver targeted support to small scale economic actors.
Through the municipality’s LED Unit, business support vouchers valued at R5,000 each were distributed to selected informal traders. This intervention is designed not only to provide immediate financial relief but also to unlock greater entrepreneurial capacity among small-scale traders who contribute meaningfully to the local economy. In the same spirit, local recyclers received fully equipped recycling carts and operational materials to support safer, more productive working conditions while promoting environmental stewardship.
This rollout follows a similar initiative in Dannhauser and will continue tomorrow, 9 May 2025, in the Emadlangeni joint IDP & Budget Roadshow, which will be final stop in Amajuba District Municipality’s IDP and Budget Roadshow series for the 2025/26 fiscal year .
