AMAJUBA DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY HOSTS MENTAL HEALTH AND DRUG AWARENESS DAY
25 June 2025 In a bid to raise awareness about mental health issues and the dangers of drug abuse, the Amajuba District Municipality, in collaboration with the Departments of Health, Social Development, and Education, recently organized a Mental Health and Drug Awareness Day event at Madadeni Provincial Hospital. This initiative aimed to educate the public about mental health, reduce associated stigma, and promote access to mental health services and rehabilitation programs. The event brought together community members, learners, healthcare workers
, and local leaders to discuss the importance of mental health and substance abuse prevention. Through a range of activities, including informative presentations, on-site services, and educational exhibitions, the event provided a valuable opportunity for community members to learn about mental health and substance abuse. The event featured presentations by mental health professionals, social workers, and educators on the early warning signs of mental illness and substance abuse. On-site services included mental health screenings, counseling sessions, and referrals to support services. Educational exhibitions showcased the work of health professionals, NGOs, and community support structures, highlighting the resources available to support mental health and well-being. Youth engagement activities, including performances, poetry, and dialogues, focused on promoting healthy lifestyles and peer support. These activities provided a platform for young people to express themselves and share their experiences. Representatives from the participating departments emphasized the importance of continued collaboration to address mental health struggles and drug abuse. They committed to increasing accessibility to mental health care, expanding outreach and prevention efforts, and strengthening law enforcement efforts to reduce drug trafficking in local communities. The event was a success, with a strong attendance from community members and stakeholders. It fostered a sense of shared responsibility and highlighted available resources for those in need of support. The Amajuba District Municipality and its partners will continue to prioritize mental health and substance abuse prevention, treatment, and education as key components of community well-being.
