HIS WORSHIP THE ACTING MAYOR, CLLR T. MTHEMBU, CONTINUES TO LEAD DISASTER RELIEF EFFORTS IN THE WAKE OF DEVASTATING STORM
His Worship, the Acting Mayor of Amajuba District Municipality, Cllr T. Mthembu, alongside the Acting Municipal Manager, Mr. T. Dube, continued to lead Disaster relief efforts in response to the recent storm that caused significant destruction in various parts of the region. Accompanied by eMadlangeni Local Municipality, Honourable
Speaker of Council, Cllr PX Qwabe, they visited Vaalbank area at eMadlangeni Local Municipality today to meet affected Families and distributed food parcels. The outreach aim was to provide immediate support to households that lost food supplies and other essentials during the disaster.
During the visit, the Acting Mayor , Cllr Mthembu emphasized the importance of leadership rooted in service and solidarity with the People, reflecting the principles often championed by the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi. He assured Residents that their needs remain a priority and pledged the municipality’s continued commitment to assisting those affected.
Amajuba District Municipality has already taken initial steps to provide relief, such as distributing blankets, foam mattresses, and other essentials to mitigate the immediate impact of the storm. To further address the situation, the municipality plans to engage with key departments, including SASSA, the Department of Social Development, Department of Health and Department of Human Settlements through the District Development Model and Operation Sukuma Sakhe structures. These engagements will aim to coordinate efforts to provide temporary accommodation, food, and additional relief supplies to those in need.
Efforts to extend assistance will continue tomorrow, the 9th of January 2025 with plans to partner with the Red Cross Society to reach more households in affected areas. These collaborative efforts underline the municipality’s dedication to comprehensive and inclusive disaster response.
In conclusion, the Acting Mayor, Cllr T Mthembu has urged Residents to remain vigilant and monitor weather alerts to stay prepared for any potential challenges brought by the ongoing rainfall. He reassured the Community that the municipality has a robust disaster contingency plan in place to respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies, prioritizing the safety and well-being of all Residents.
