AMAJUBA DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY LAUNCHED ITS SUMMER CONTINGENCY PLAN IN BLAAUWBOSCH, WARD 15

Amajuba District Municipality's Disaster Management Unit, today, 30 October 2024, officially unveiled its Summer Contingency Plan in Blaauwbosch, Ward 15. With the objective to educate and prepare communities for potential disasters associated with the summer season, including lightning strikes, heavy rains, and thunderstorms, the launch featured an in depth presentation from the Provincial Disaster Management Centre to caution the community on impending disaster risks and optimal preparation and recovery strategies.
The presentation also emphasised the criticality of reporting disaster emergencies through established channels, ensuring swift response to incidents.
Speaking at the event, the Honourable Mayor of Amajuba District Municipality, Cllr uMntwana Ndabuko Zulu underscored the significance of the summer contingency plan, and used the opportunity to highlight the municipality's enhanced capacity to respond to disasters following the completion of the Disaster Management Centre. This cutting-edge facility boasts a 24/7 call centre designed for efficient emergency response.
Additionally, the Mayor announced that the municipality is currently in the processes of procuring 60 lightning conductors to be installed in high-risk areas, particularly eMadlangeni and Dannhauser. This proactive measure aims to bolster safety and mitigate risks during the forthcoming stormy months.
The event coincided with the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, embracing the theme "Empowering the Next Generation for a Resilient Future." Learners from Nkabane and Zamakhanya Primary Schools actively participated in discussions on disaster preparedness and recovery, cultivating resilience among the youth.
Through such educational initiatives, the municipality aspires to foster a resilient Amajuba District, capable of effectively responding to and recovering from disasters.
